I. Scales/Rudiments
Wind
Instruments and Melodic Percussion
A. Chromatic
Scale: to be tongued up and slurred
down: played as eighth notes in a moderate tempo.
Flute - C
to G: 2 ½ octaves
Oboe/Melodic
Percussion - C to C: 2 octaves
Bassoon
- F to Bb: 2 ½ octaves
Bb Clarinet – E to C: 2
½ octaves
Low Clarinets - E to E: 2
octaves
Alto & Tenor Sax – C to C: 2
octaves
Baritone Sax – C to G: 1
½ octaves
Trumpet/Baritone (T. C.) - C to G: 1 ½ octaves
Horn – C to F: 1
½ octaves
Trombone/Baritone B.C./Tuba - Bb to F: 1
½ octaves
B. Major
scales to be tongued up and slurred down, played one octave in the most
comfortable range of the p1ayer. They may be played two octaves at the student's
option. Music may be used in this
part of the audition. All instruments will use the following concert scales:
Concert Pitch.. C, F, Bb, Eb,
Ab, Db Quarter note=72 (minimum for all scales)
Major scales shall be performed in the
following rhythmic pattern: 1quarter & 6 eighth notes
Chromatic scale shall be performed in one of the following
patterns: Triplets, eighths, or
sixteenths
Percussion Auditions
Snare Drum Rudiments The
following snare drum rudiments will be required every year for Middle School
percussionists (all should be played in a slow-fast-slow format): double stroke
roll; single stroke roll; five (5) stroke roll; nine (9) stroke roll; flams;
Paradiddles.
Keyboard Scales C, F,
Bb, Eb, Ab, Db, Chromatic.
Timpani All percussionists
auditioning for Honor Band will be required to demonstrate a long roll played
in a
pp-ff-pp format on the timpani.
Required Equipment All percussion
instruments will be supplied for those auditioning for Honor Band Percussion.
However, each student is required to bring his/her own sticks or mallets. Students
are allowed to supply their own bell kit and/or snare drum but must use the supplied
timpani. A timpani tuner will NOT be supplied.
